I think I have followed everything in the documentation, and have
googled for a while before writing to the list. I'm using Nagios 2.8
and NLG 1.03 on Fedora 6, Apache 2.2.3.

I believe the contact list only comes into play after an alert is
triggered so I cannot think of why this change would cause the problem you
describe (If I am wrong please someone correct me, I am here to learn)
were there any patrches that went on you machines around the same time?

Nagios has been running fine for us for months. After a simple change to update
the contact list, all check_nt checks are periodically failing with socket
timeouts. I have upgraded to Nagios 2.8 and I have tried increasing the timeout
to 59 seconds, but the problem is getting worse. It
