Okay, I think I found part of the answer. Setting the default user to
"guest" *and* setting "use_authentication=0" seems to get me past the
"Warning" screen. It seems you need both set to work.
But now when I try to use any of the external commands, I get another
message:

Well, it looks like the Perl script doesn't extract it, I placed
some comments in the script to be written out as it constructs the
debug log and sure enough, some needed values are left unset. Windows
hosts seem to output snmp comman

when you tested via command line - did you do it as the nagios user or as root ?
This is the first thing to come to mind .
also you may want to check the permissions on the check_http plugin.
