nagios is not a protocol per se . its uses already well known protocols .
it depends on what type of check you want to capture packets
if the check is performed using snmp that filter snmp packets on wireshark
if check uses nrpe , nsca then filter the IP and the port respectively

choosen Teamtilt for Nagios. ( http://www.alarmtilt.com/nagios )
I can relay my notifications through SMS, voice call and iPhone push and
credits are not expensive !
