data (I have nagios installed to /opt/nagios instead of
/usr/local/nagios). I symlinked /opt/nagios/var to /usr/local/nagios/var
(until I can figure out what is going on), and my data appeared.
Pnp4nagios is a *LOT* better than nagiosgrapher

I was hoping I could use groups to create service dependencies, since it
will be the same for every server in the hostgroup.
I do realize I can script the config file creation, but maintenance will
be so much easier with host groups.

You could use SNMP if it is configured. Make sure to change your
community from public to something else and make it read only
