The best way to do it is to define service PING to this host with
check inteval 1 minute this way you will know almost immediatly when
the host is down. i would set the notification for few minutes later
if you dont want to be notified each time the ping failes.

you didn't explain what exactly you want to integrate if you want to check mrtg data simply use the plugin
check_mrtg from the nagios-plugins it can check values in the mrtg data files.
