Yeah, if she's been to a discount salon to get her gel nails, most likely
she has acrylic with a gel sealer on top. You'll have to ask a bunch of
questions (how was it applied, like liquid and powder, or cured every layer
in the UV lamp, that sort of thing). If it's MMA acrylic she's got on,

Most likely you will have to file them off. There are some gel that can be
soaked off though. She might have Shellac or some kind of sog and is just
calling it gel nails. If she has been going to a discount salon she might just
have acrylic with a gel topcoat. Good luck.
