Of course all of us are going to be watching this story. Personally, I DO believe they can trace the DNA of the virus and determine whether or not it was from the same source. What I do NOT believe they can do with certainty is say that the only possible fluid-to-fluid contact these two cousins had was at a nail salon years ago. There are potentially many other contacts possible in family members.
If our clients ask us, we want to be fully informed, so here is a little more information about our role in Infection Control: In 1985 OSHA introduced a program for health care providers working with potential Blood Borne Pathogens - BBPs and called it Universal Precautions. It was defined as "The practice of avoiding contact with bodily fluids by means of the wearing of nonporous articles such as gloves, goggles, and face shields." In 1996, the term was replaced by "Standard Precautions" and expanded to not only include BBPs but Other Potentially Infectious Materials or OPIM, including all body fluids, mucous membranes, secretions (except sweat) and the cultures and culture mediums containing these materials. Also, at this time, the Act expanded the coverage from just health care providers to ALL workers (including salon workers) who might have contact with OPIMs. That means us! And if we are not using our PPEs (Personal Protection Equipment) then we are gravely at risk from all kinds of BBPs through direct fluid-to-fluid contact AND indirect surface contact . When I said 72 hours, that was the maximum time we were able to keep it alive in the perfect conditions. The quote you posted notes an extrapolation, but is mostly factual. However if you use nippers or a pusher, draw blood, then give it to someone else who also draws blood within five minutes or so, infection is possible. As a side note healthcare workers, first responders, police etc. are trained to treat every person as if they are infected. It's called universal precautions. Infection is only possible in fluid to fluid contact. The virus needs to get into an open wound and into the blood stream. It is hard to contract HIV, but not impossible. The manicure story is completely plausible. Unlikely, but plausible. This is where I have had my information from:, I am not disagreeing with you, I just wanted to let you know that this is what I have learned over the years. diana from indiana " However, drying of these fluids reduces the amount of infectious virus by 99 percent in a span as low as a few hours, according to CDC. So we can say that most of the HIV virus dies within several hours outside the body because of inappropriate temperature, lack of human host and other factors. ' ' 'Studies that looked at HIV survival, used concentrations of HIV at least 100,000 times higher than concentrations normally found in nature. Using these extremely high concentrations of HIV was used out of necessity, because of scientific and technical limitations. In studies using these extremely high concentrations, HIV was able to survive for 1-3 days after drying, but inactivation of the virus was extremely rapid (90-99% within several hours). Now, does this mean that HIV at normal concentrations will survive for up to 3 days? No! Remember that these are concentrations of HIV that are at least 100,000 times higher than that found in nature. When we extrapolate this data down to natural concentrations of HIV, we can determine that HIV can only live for several minutes outside the body. If HIV were to be able to survive outside the body for many hours or days (at natural concentrations), we would have seen cases of <http://www.thebody.com/content/art30024.html?ic=4002>HIV transmission through casual contact. In the over 15 years that we have been studying HIV transmission, we have never seen any cases of transmission through casual contact worldwide.
