I use NorthStar in my network, and actually was a developer on it for a
while. It's fairly stable, but development has somewhat stalled because of
real life issues for the primary developer.

When I worked for NeoPets in the summer of 2000 they had a server farm about
that size. It was behind a NetFoundry (I think) Load Balancer at the time.
Perhaps their load balancer died and they had to get back up in a hurry.

We were hit hard by this as well. It appears to be a buffer overflow
exploit, as blocking the ports on my router and restarting MS SQL put a stop
to it.

1434 is the SQL Server Resolution Service.
Unfortunately, this appears to be a whole new thing, I was unable to find
anything more recent then May of 2002 about security issues with this port.

to the
wayside. Many times a reminder e-mail has come at a moment where I was able
do to something about it.
