The solution of U-308 uranium tri-oxide has a concentration of 1.0 mg/litres. Blair Spitzberg, chief of the Fuel Cycle and Decommissioning Branch of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Region 4 said this is "quite a low concentration similar to background radiation." The solution had already been stripped of the uranium it was carrying up from the underground ore before the spill occurred. The spill resulted from a plumbing failure at the injection well head, the company said. The well was shut down for repair and the spill stopped. A soil sample will be analyzed to determine if soil cleanup is required. The licensee, the U.S. subsidary of the French government owned Cogema company, said there was no health or environmental hazard. But Spitzberg said the Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently returned from investigating three similar incidents at the mine over the past four months. "In this case there were no consequenses," Spitzberg said. "We would be concerned about a spill large enough to get into a fresh water stream which then got offsite."
