Canadian Lawmaker Faces Trial

.c The Associated Press

PELICAN NARROWS, Saskatchewan (AP) -- A member of Canada's Parliament was
ordered Thursday to stand trial on charges of sexually assaulting two teen-age
girls from an Indian reservation while he was a policeman there 30 years ago.

Jack Ramsay, a member of the right-wing Reform Party, was charged last August
after a yearlong investigation into the alleged incidents between 1969 and
1971 at Pelican Narrows, about 220 miles northeast of the Saskatchewan city of
Saskatoon.

Ramsay, now 61, was in charge of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment
on the reservation at the time. The women who pressed charges were then 14 and
15.

Ramsay said he expects to be vindicated at the trial. No starting date was set
at Thursday's preliminary hearing.

Ramsay left the Mounties in 1971 after 14 years and was elected to Parliament
from an Alberta district in 1993.

Unlike some Reform politicians, Ramsay has a reputation as a supporter of
Indian causes. As a private investigator, he played a crucial role in helping
prove the innocence of a Cree Indian who spent four years in jail for a murder
he didn't commit.
