Gerald Robert Wilson Jr., was found guilty of manslaughter last year of the 1996 shooting death of his common-law wife, Dorothy Martin. He was sentenced to seven years. But the Manitoba Court of Appeal granted Wilson a new trial in June after deciding the trial judge erred in his instructions to the jury. Wilson was first charged with second-degree murder, but a jury found him guilty of manslaughter. The verdict sparked outrage among aboriginals who wanted Wilson found guilty of murder.
