Thanks for responding.
On the laptop, I installed Fedora 20 (full, not desktop).
The wireless was found even during the installation.
It's such a pleasure when software installs cleanly. :)
I've also installed the Cinnamon desktop. It has the
Start button, and the look and feel

I wonder what software is running on that server.
Sometimes the software dictates the java version.
Or, it came with the Linux install.
By using different users, scripts, and/or environment variables,
it's possible to have different versions of java to coexist
on the same Linux serv
I use both Ubuntu 14.04 and OS X for development and our production servers
are RHEL 6.6.
I've previously used Mint on the desktop and it was fine, but plain Ubuntu
just seems to be the path of least resistance.
On the RHEL servers my current frustration is the apparent dearth of recent
JDKs
I use Ubuntu on desktop and server to good effect. Some customers pushed me
to use redhat and centos, and it was always more work (but possibly due to
less experience on those platforms). In general I found community support
on ubuntu to be exceptional (both for desktop and server type concerns).
I use Debian and Ubuntu based distros generally. Specifically, my current
preference for desktop OS is Linux Mint Debian Edition - I've leaned
slightly away from Ubuntu over the past few years. For servers, both Debian
and Ubuntu are good choices although, again, I ususally now err towards the
form
After 1/2 year of experiments, we've completely switched to Ubuntu Linux
14.04. I recommend it. And no windows at all.
