SOLVED
thank you! error was due to a "ghost" previous installation (probably done
with brew), which mapped the command neo4j to the previous folder
installation > so it was loading the kernel of version 1.8

It is not int he directory from where I start the server (version 2.12)
it looks like it is pointing to a db which i think not existing anymore
(version 1.8)

In the new ui it is under the top tab
In the old webadmin under server info and store-directory

an old version kernel 1.8:
at launch, webadmin displayed the old database I had (thank u lorenzo for
telling me what i shoudl get)
I was also experiementing by starting it as job:
http://docs.neo4j.org/chunked/1.
Can you please share
/path/to/neo4j/data/log/console.log
and
/path/to/neo4j/data/graph.db/messages.log

The error I get is, for almost every query:
"Unknown error An unknown error occurred, was unable to retrieve a result
for you."
