I've ben thinking about the MSP430 series and their SoC/ wireless chips (mostly
802.15.4 based) - very nice suite of devices
Trouble is I've always been an Atmel guy, so it's a big switch though I suspect
that the learning curve is not too bad...
Perhaps its time to change. ..

I did. I have a board that i purchased when the product first came out, but
I have only fired it up maybe twice, for small hello-world type runs. Might
use it for the clock

The MSP430 is also programmable with a piece of software that is almost
entirely comparable with the Arduino IDE, if you are familliar with that at
all. It is called Enigma, it is exactly as easy to work with as the arduino
platform.

Itead and seedstudio are both pretty darn good. I've used them both a few
times with no issues. Quality is good, but not great.
Don't push the design limits posted on their submission pages. They may say
6/6 rules, but you have a much better chance of getting problem free boards
back if you don't
Hi John,
Thanks for that - I think I'll give the various options here a go - they're
so cheap and the quality seems comparable - however, its not a good time of
year to be ordering what with Christmas here than the Chinese New Year at
the end of January.

I use them regularly and so far I'm very happy with the results.
Note that you should not expect miracles: those are boards produced in China at
rock-bottom prices, so mistakes will sometimes be made. One of my orders got
lost once and I had to ask for it to be produced and sent again. But
cons
I have a couple of 6 NL5440A sets listed on E-bay. Listing 281224495624
for one of them. I will be listing some other displays as well in the
near future. I will be listing 6 Pinlight DIP-651Rs shortly. These are
incandescent 7 segment displays in a small DIP package.
