What are You about to measure? What scope do You have? If You are a common
hobbyist starting up then dispose of the plans for a bench multimeter. What
You really need is a scope. Doing electronics without one is like trying to
fix a clockwork with a blindfold put on. There are many good scopes

multimeter has seen better days (the stand is broken and it's a pain to
change the batteries in it)...so I wanted a relatively inexpensive bench
top one I could plug in instead...I'll keep my eye out for a good HP one

I'm a huge fan of the Agilent 34401A - now superceded but still the best
selling bench DMM ever. The replacement 34461A new is less than a new 344301A
but the older one is often available on auction sites.
Probably overkill but undoubtedly the best there is :)

Yes the 34401A is an excellent meter, I have several here on different
benches in our lab, and as you mention has been superseded. However it
probably still sells for around four hundred bucks, give or take, on
Ebay in WARRANTIED working condition, which may still be a bit much for
some folks.
The HP's and Flukes are all really good but I picked up a Techtronixs CDM250
awhile back for a song and a dance. Nice meter. Look on the bay as there is
plenty there of all types.
