Look for proxychains. Maybe you can use that?

Yes you would have to send requests to a range of IP addresses and see who
answers back. Or maybe you can use some bonjour like protocol.
The manager can send requests to an agent that can trigger a command to be
executed yes.

we have big mib definition file. we build this into a dynamically
loadable object and "dlmod" it at runtime in snmpd.conf. now i was
hoping to split this mib file into multiple smaller ones to make it
more manageable. (sp) ie, split some of the sub tree banches in
