I am new to net-snmp too.
To answer you question, it depends on the target where SNMP will be running.
For Linux machine on PCs , it's simple as David describe below.
For embedded platforms, it's complicated, the link describes how to:

Hi,
I am using net-snmp 5.4. I built snmp using default configuration ( by running
./config ) and it's working. We are
using RedHat.
I tried to builld an image for Renesas CPU on the same directory and I got
this error:
configure: WARNING: you should use --build, --host, --target

Hi,
I am trying to understand how SNMP agent gets access to MIB counters that
reside on HW platforms.
Can anyone tell me where to look for this information?.
I am interested in Ether-like MIB, Bridge MIB, RMON Mibs .
