I don't really disagree with this, but would like to mention
that comercial vendors decide whether to fix a problem based
on their own commercial interests.  Somthing critical for you
may not be critical for them.  With open source you always
have the option of fixing a problem yourself or hiring a contractor
to do it for you.

If you're goal is high-availability and maximum up-time, you
should go through a vendor that will cater to your needs. If
you need an up-do-date SNMP agent that's priced right (free),
but not without some performance issues and the occasional
crash & burn feature, then this is just the SNMP agent for
you.

This is not to say that the vendor's agent won't have the
same issues mentioned above -- but you will be able to get
them addressed by someone who is dedicated to servicing your
product.

It's just reality.  I wouldn't use net-snmp in my pace maker
to send a trap notifying me of an impending heart attack :-)

But I would use it in my switch, router, server, printer,
PDA, etc.
