Can you try starting the agent using '-I-ip' (to disable the IP module).
Do you still see the same problem?

I have just compiled and install net-snmp 5.3.1 on AIX 5.2.
Compiler is gcc .
I have executed /usr/local/sbin/snmpd -r -d /usr/local /share/snmp/snmpd.conf
