Thanks for the suggestion, Jeff- but I noticed -lcrypt appears during the build process. I added it manually anyway but that led to errors concerning OpenSSL so will follow Miko's advice and send to pkgsrc-users. Apologies for the mismail, I'm sure I could come up with an excuse at a push. (:
