I was wondering if you might have any insights into a similar issue that I'm experiencing.

I was running Mandrake 10.1 Official download version with no mouse problems whatsoever but I decided to finally do my bit and signed up for Mandrake Club. Long story, short, I downloaded the PowerPack DVD ISO, checked the md5sum, burned it, and installed it. And then, althoughthe keyboard worked fine, things got weird with the mouse.

At first the mouse cursor was frozen but I went into MCC and selected the mouse selection that's always worked for me before, "Generic PS/2 Wheel Mouse". At this point the "test" dialogue came up and regardless of what I tried to do, the mouse basically freaked out. If I hit the left button, the driver thought I was hitting both the left button and the wheel. Attempts to move the cursor resulted in chaos; I can't even describe what all went on. I then tried other selections in MCC similar results.

After reading your post below, I tried your suggestion for lilo. That seemed to fix my mouse but I noticed that the displays on my tty's (alt-F1-6) were trashed out so I backed it out for now.

I don't know if it's pertinent or not, but when I looked at my XF86Config, I noticed that the installation had automatically select the "nvidia" driver versus the "nv" drive I was running with the download version of Mandrake 10.1. Below is the stanza related to the mouse:

Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier "Mouse1"
   Driver "mouse"
   Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
   Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
   Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
EndSection

At this point, I'm not sure what to do. I tried messing with the "ZAxisMapping" settings because I vaguely remembered seeing something about that somewhere. Yes, desperation was setting in.

I should mention that my mouse is actually a Logitech cordless Trackman Wheel that is connected through a KVM switch. I don't know if any of that's a problem or not, but I've run it that way with every version of Mandrake since 9.x without an issue. I would like to retain the comfort and convenience of this set up if at all possible.

If anybody has anything to suggest, I would be very grateful.

TIA
Carl

Answered my own question by looking at the kernel config - psmouse is configured into the kernel instead of being a module (duh, and I was just getting used to the module business.) Anyway, adding append="psmouse.proto=imps" to the /etc/lilo.conf (and remembering to reload the changed params) and it's back up and running.
