[newbie] kernel questions (patching and soundcore.o)

Hi I have L-M v. 7.0 with the 2.2.16 kernel. When I run Linux with the installed kernel (2.2.14) my sound works fine, but when I try running Linux with the new kernel, I get an error saying that sound and midi modules can't be found. Also, I've downloaded the kernel patch ide.2.2.16 , but I'm not

[newbie] kernel problems.

the sound module soundcore.o doesn't get compiled. Can anyone help me out with this?   Thanks, Daniel H
