I faced the same problem when trying to connect to my company's network via
Kppp.
Luckily, Kppp provides login scripting support which eliminates the need to
have a terminal window open when logging in.

I've successfully accomplished this by using:
smbmount //{Server}/{Share} /mnt/ntshare -C -U {username} -P {password}
I used ntshare for testing. You probably have created a directory with a
different name under /mnt.
