I run mandrake 6.0 on a 486 without a kernel recompile. I haven't had
any serious problems with it but then I am only playing right now. I
just did a custom install and left out some of the components I didn't
need.

I had similar problems with my video card. It is an
ancient ATI VGA-Wonder in my little 486. I re-installed
Mandrake and the problem went away. I figure it was
related to a bad filecopy during the install process.
