[newbie] small screen and no TrackPoint

Hi... The good news is that I am running X on my IBM ThinkPad 770z (finally). The bad news is that the visible desktop is only half the size of my screen. I am running Mandrake 8.0 and have tried using lower resolutions and the like. Also, I cannot use the TrackPoint mouse on the laptop.
