You should first make sure that your card is logically up. You can do this
by sending it the ifup eth0 command. Then make sure you can ping you own ip
address. If you can ping your own ip address then try your dns server.
Also you have not mentioned setting up your default route so
Is your system freezing or is the command just not doing anything?
Sometimes you won't see the errors that you are getting unless you started
DrakeConf from a xterm session. Try opening a Xterm session and start your

I have a 3com Ethernet card on a dell 5000e laptop. I got the card
configured correctly (or so I think) because I can get to the net and
everything in my network. However when I first boot into Linux it fails to
bring up eth0. Once the system is up all I do is type in ifup eth0
