at boot time type linux 3 and it will boot to a command prompt. Or after boot, if you do a ctrl, alt, f1 you will get a console window that you can log onto and fix x windows. (you may have to do a ctrl z and then type bg to put the X windows into background. - Original Message - From:

I was having a similar problem with my auto updates. I was able to fix it by opening a terminal window going xhost +localhost before doing the update.
