Here is a general message for the newbies out there who are lost and
confused.

Linux is NOT Windows. Linux is Unix. Unix is relies heavily on command
line instruction. Remember DOS? It's time to get used to that again.

Let me suggest a *VERY* good book which will:

Tell you what Unix is
Tell you about its history
Teach the basics of file editing using the most popular and widespread
editors
Teach you basic shell commands and scripting
Teach you how to use ubiquitous files and utilities.

and ultimately give you the background you need to successfully use
almost any variety of Unix.

The book:

Unix System V Release 4: An Introduction (second edition)
by K.H. Rosen, R.R. Rosinski, J. M. Farber, D. A. Host
ISBN 0-07-882130-4

Learn this fundamentals, and there is no longer any reason to fear Linux
or any kind of Unix.
