I've started playing with, and really like, Enlightenment as a desktop environment, and with Rox as a file manager, I think I've found a combination with which I'm happy. It seems to be quite fast/light/configurable, more so than the window manager(s) that come with KDE/Gnome.
I do somewhat miss a few of the Gnome applets, and the ease of having my favorite half-dozen programs readily available; I've been experimenting with Rox, and haven't quite managed to replicate a good, ol' fashioned toolbar yet. But add in a Gnome panel, and it's just about perfect for my tastes, that I can tell so far. But am I shooting myself in the foot [no wonder there are only four toes :-) ] by doing this? It's a bit too early for me to tell, compare speed/etc., having just set up this configuration, and only having a couple of weeks' experience with Linux anyhow. By adding a Gnome panel, am I necessarily invoking the rest of the Gnome processes (Nautilus is what I'm mostly concerned about)? They don't appear to be in the listing that top shows, so am I correct in assuming I'm using the gnome panel a la carte, so to speak? I might be willing (experience will tell, I suppose) to trade off a bit of speed for the panel, as I don't much care for the Rox pinboard -- though that dislike may simply be because I don't know how to use it properly yet. :-) -- ltheden at earthlink dot net * ICQ: 1709079 * AIM: Cegorach Registered Unix user #285523 Tax reform means "Don't tax you, don't tax me, tax that fellow behind the tree." -- Russell Long
