Thanks, Sridhar! That pointed me to the correction needed... The line
was:

/dev/hda1 / ext3 rw,uid=0,gid=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0 0 0

When I went to the backup file, I saw that somehow it had gotten changed
from the original:

/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1

I still don't know WHAT changed it, since I'm the only one that can log
on to this machine (it's my personal machine). But whatever did it,
believe me, I'll keep backups religiously from now on. Only took three
days to get back to normal! 


Now if I could only get KDE3 working! <grin>
