If you're hesitant to edit /etc/inittab, you can, while in KDE or Gnome, run
the Mandrake Control Center (should be on an icon on the desktop). From
their, select Boot Config (under Boot) and uncheck the box that says "Launch
the X-Windows system at start." Doing so will have Mandrake make th
Edit (as root) the following file: /etc/inittab.
Replace the line
id:5:initdefault
with
id:3:initdefault
Next time you boot, you will only get to command prompt and X-Windows will
not start.
