Phew!   Ok, folks.  I've learned the XFS is very essential to running X.  I've also learned how to start the XFS from the command line.  I turns out I was able to just "ctrl"+"c" the "sending all processes the TERM signal", bringing me to a login prompt at runlevel 3.  I logged in as root a
