[newbie] Kernel module loads manually but not on demand

I have a kernel module that loads manually fine, but refuses to load on demand. What sort of things should I be looking for to fix this? The module is for my Plustek scanner. I posted the below to the Plustek list a few days ago but didn't get any leads. Perhaps someone here will have an idea
