If you use Mandrake's kernel you won't have to do any compiling and when it's installed properly it leaves your old kernel intact. You can find the latest kernel in Mandrake Cooker. Download it and su to root, then type: rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.13-2mdk.rpm or whatever version they're up to now. Remember, because it's from Cooker there are no gurantees about how well it works, but if you install with the same command above, your old kernel will still be intact if you need to fall back.
