Well, I yelled too damm soon I guess. I should have RTFArchives first then I would have gotten a clue. As it was when I did the 'update' it didn't put the right entry in my /etc/modules.conf. As it was luckily I back up /home and /etc and I just copied the working modules.conf file back to /etc. All is well now with the sound.
