Years ago I used Ability Office - DOS version - which was amazing in its capabilities. For instance it had live links between modules - updating a spreadsheet automatically updated charts and any other links made, and the whole suite sold for £25. A couple of years ago I realised that they were now doing a windows version, and recently I became aware that there is now a linux project.
Like everyone else they have had to try to import M$ files, so it may be a possible line of enquiry for those of you with database needs at lowest cost. There is a download trial, which should answer that. URL is www.ability.com I may look into it myself, later, but they're not M$ database files that I need to use, so it's not as likely to work for me.
