I've successfully setup Yellow Dog, Mandrake, Gentoo and Debian on my Powerbook Pismo, so it's certainly worth trying to put Mandrake on your old tower. The PPC versions of the distros are a little behind the x86 versions, but they are certainly useable. The only thing that is a pain in the butt for your computer is it's an Old World machine and will need BootX to get into Linux. Still, it's worth trying, even for the learning experience.

If you want to see a list of all the PPC distros that I've heard of, go to http://www.chrisruzin.net/comments/1043_0_1_0_C/
