Well, in my case, it was just to remove it, since it was a PCI card. But I don't know if there are variants build in to the M/B. Or try some AT commands to the device from bash, like echo AT >/dev/modem echo ATDTMy_Owm_Phone_Number >/dev/modem which should make it dial itself (I think), and give a busy tone I don't remember any more AT-commands but there should be plenty via google I remember have to fiddle a bit with the setting 'Wait for dial tone' in kppp. And having a look a kppp now, I see there's a terminal window for trouble shooting it in setup | modem | Terminal > But first : my concern is not to loose a M$ refugee only because > he can't get a modem up !
