I find that if I plug in the device that fstab knew as sde a second time it is recognised as sdf, and manual mounting seemed the only way around it, together with the difficulty of giving user rights. However, if, when that happens, I power down the drive, then power it up again, it mounts as sde - and fstab is happy again.
