[newbie] Suggestions on FTP and Firewall software on LM81

I was wondering what would be the best freeware FTP and firewall setup. Would I need a program or any executable or would it be better to just modify things directly? I know FTP needs a daemon and the firewall could just use the IPTABLES. What is the best.
