Sorry to respond to my own post, but I did some further research
concerning the system sounds...It seems that the first user to log-in
gets sound, but any user thereafter that logs-in doesn't get sound.
Solution: don't log in at the console more then once, or find my prior

I am able to get system sounds to work for the initial user
created during the install procedureSo I know my sound
card works and that the sound configuration was successful.
But when creating subsequent users, the system sounds do
not work. When I enter the command 'kaudioserver'
