Ramin to quote from the 9.2 Definitive Guide "if you are recompiling a kernal with exactly the same version as the one already present on your system, the old modules must be deleted first. eg, if you are recompiling 2.4.22, you must delete the /lib/modules/2.4.22 directory."
Maybe one of the brains trust out there could clarify this for those of us less knowledgeable.
