I am running LM 7.2 on a PIII 770 with 256 mbs ram and a Voodoo 3 3500. I
have know Windows like the back of my hand but this Linux stuff is throwing
me for a loop. :) Now that I have those specifics out I'll tell you my
problem. Mandrake boots up fine until it tries to start the graphical login
for X. At this point it appears as if the computer is frozen, i.e. doesn't
respond to any keyboard inputs and the screen goes dark. After 6 minutes
the login finaly comes up and everything runs smooth until I try and do
anything in X. If I try to open a terminal or Drakconf or pretty much
anything, the "working" window opens in the task bar as if it's trying to
open the window I want, but then after about 30 seconds it just disappears.
Again, about 6 minutes later the window will finally open. After I get a
terminal window opened all commands work just fine in the terminal, but X
still takes forever to do anything. I'm pretty much at my wit's end as to
what could be wrong because I didn't do anything to the computer to cause it
to do this. It was working fine one night and then the next morning when I
booted it up it just started doing this. Sure hope someone else knows what
this is.....I'm sure it's an easy fix....just something I'm doing wrong. I
apologize for being so long winded. Thanks in advance for any help.
