On FreeBSD I put 'exec startkde' in .xinitrc and then just run xinit from
the console. Linux should be the same in that respect since X is X.

Now when i log in, from the graphical login screen, instead taking me
to kde, it takes me to a blank desktop with an xterm open. This happens even
if i have the session type set to KDE. To start kde, i have to enter startkd
