Hi,
This is my first mandrake installation, so the question might seem trivial
:-)
I have a Compaq Presario machine that I've partitioned with both Linux and Win
98. The problem is that since the installation I can't seem to communicate
with the modem (PCMCIA). When inside kppp, I query my modem, it either says
"Sorry, the modem doesn't respond" or "Sorry, the modem is busy", depending on
the device, i.e. ttyS0 or ttyS1 respectively. The /var/log/messages doesn't
give any intuitive suggestions either. It just says

"... <machine name> modprobe: can't locate module char-major-43"

Any suggestions would be of great help. Is there a tool to configure
connectivity with the modem? Isn't Linux supposed to acknowledge the modem at
boot time (I've tried to reboot as well)?

Thanks,

Abbas
