Hi, I selected all the package categories except "extra documentation", that is, I did not select individual packages. After configuring autofs, found no autofs (/usr/sbin/automount not there). Then I went to the RPMS directory on the CD and did rpm -ivh autofs...rpm This went fine, showed that autofs package was not installed. But shouldnt it have been installed in the first place? I used the mandrake-60-2.iso, and the floppy boot image on there (the one for northern european language). Autofs now works fine, except one guy claims it stopped working while the computer was running. That is, the mount point was empty when listed. What can we do to catch the most helpful information if it happens again, how can we figure out why? Then, why does it take 30 times longer to copy a small file into a directory with 40-50-60,000 files than into a directory with only a few files? (again, thanks to Chmouel for the tip of switching off --color when doing ls of many files.) Finally, and this may not be relevant to Mandrake Linux at all, I have a program (available with source code) which freezes a Redhat 5.2 cold after running for an hour. There is enough ram and disk space left when it happens, and there is nothing unusual in /var/log/messages, nor in /var/log/kernel where I directed kern* messages (in /etc/syslog.conf) Today I will install Mandrake 6.0 and try again.
