I was trying to write some data onto a FAT partition under WinME but when I
start WinME it crashes first and I have to reboot. After rebooting I force
it to start in normal mode and only then do I get the desktop back. I can

This is most likely a Windows ME problem, unrelated to Linux. Try running
a Thorough Scandisk, and then Defrag, and see if that helps.
