Hi. I also have a Dell laptop (Inspiron) with the Xircom Cardbus
Ethernet + Modem. I haven't had many problems with linux. I'm assuming
you've got a DSL or Cable connection if you want it to pick up the IP on
startup. This I believe is a quirk with the Xircom cardbus, it work

Is it hanging on the floppy drive? I installed Mandrake
on a DELL Laptop also and even though I never had the floppy drive in the
machine it automagically mounted it during startup. Then it would hang
trying to unmount it. If this is the case, edit the /etc/fstab and comment
out the line
