No, /var is on the root ( / ) partition if it is not its own partition.

Cool, so I can copy them from there to a temp folder in my /home and then if things go askew
as they do frequently I still have them after a reinstall. Thanks for the info.

You may be able to use Red Hat 6.x RPMs or SRPMs. SRPMs may be better
since you can compile them for your Mandrake system. It'd be best to
wait a few days for the official Mandrake ones, though.
