Can anyone help with this problem
X 3.3.6 was originally installed. X4.2 was then installed from the ports
tree. BSD version 4.5 cvsup tag

The saga continues. I grow slightly wiser. From my ~/.history file:

Does running the binary XFree86 check ones /etc/X11/XF86Config file's
specifications against the above Cards file??

I've been having problems with my x configuration.
startx tells me that there isn't enough memory for any of my chosen modes,
even though I know that they work under win95.
It then tries a resolution of 320X200,
and finally crashes, telling me

Hi again.
I have read the XFree86.0.log more carefully now and can see that the error

I was not speaking of the "modeline" you find in the monitor section, X can find out
what is valid
by itself (usually:^) -i.e. you can usually remove or comment out all "modeline" lines
there- but
from the "modes" line in the display subsection of the screen section. There, it

Thanks for your help. I'd love to do that, the problem is that I don't
know what modelines to put in there. I tried copying one for 1600x1200
but then X complained that it wasn't a valid mode. Any advice on how I
can hack up an appropriate modeline?

when I boot XFree86 with a single head (a NEC AccuSync
95F or a CTX 1785), the drivers load and the screen
comes up without a problem. However, when I try to
add sections for the dual head, I get unresolved
symbol problems when I run startx.
I've pasted the /var/log/XFree86.0.log from one of

look in your XF86Config if you have a virtual resolution defined somewhere and comment
it out, in
the "modes" line of the display subsection leave only the resolution you want (the
highest is
taken by default as the virtual resolution if this is not specified elsewhere...)
